Anybody played text adventures?

Post by earthyearth »

Even MORE old school then the games LoG is based on, there were text based games

like it would says something like

"You are in a dark room. You see a bucket on the floor, and a door to the east"

And you would have to type in a command such as "Go East" or "Get Bucket"

Some later games had still pictures in them but earlier games were ONLY text.

I played those a lot as a kid on a Commodore 64

anyone else play those?

Eis und Feuer - Teil 1: Der Magier.

I played it for a long time without knowing, how to actually save a game...

...and all the Magnetic Scrolls Games like The Pawn and The Guild of Thieves...

And then there was this old Scott Adams Game The Count. With this one I figured out, how to 'get out' of a bed in a vampire castle...in English language. :)

Sure.
Some were multiplayer network games ~called MUDs.
There are still a few maintained today; some are online java or browser based. Search Google for 'text based RPG'.
Infocom was famous for them; Their "Hitchhiker's Guide" has been put online by the BBC: http://www.douglasadams.com/creations/infocomjava.html

Played a few back on the Speccy and Atari ST. My dad also wrote one, I believe.

Me and my friends pondered once how effective one would be today with boolean text recognition.

I played a game a few years ago that was a mix of Elite, Space Invaders, Command and Conquer and text adventure. It's name escapes me but it was pretty good.

I played millions of text adventures. One that sticks in my mind was called madness and the Minotaur, that game near sent me ma...ma...mad.
It all ended for me with the making of the Hobbit, when graphics started to get introduced into text adventures.

Hobbit was great.

I played Beyond Zork tonight; got into the wine seller, and got killed by a ''rat-ant".
