Yay finished Grimrock, my thoughts =P

Post by silverk »

Finished it over the weekend and really enjoyed the game overall. Here are some things that i liked:

I thought the length of the game was just right. I think additional standalone expansions of this size would be great. Long enough to feel the progression of your characters with loot and levels ups and short enough to finish in a weekend or two.

I appreciated the developers balance between traditional hardcore dungeon games and more modern games. I like that there were plenty of hidden loot to be had and almost all could be figured out with a little patience. Same for the puzzles. I only had to look up two things, and was able to find all secrets. I also thought combat difficulty was spot on(I played normal), i only ended up using less than a dozen health potions, most of which was from the fighters challenge(that was fun =P). I'm glad they included many of the traditional elements not commonly found in modern games such as hunger, weight, inventory slots, etc. I guess I consider myself a decent gamer of these types, so I figure a casual gamer will be able to get though this feeling triumphant.

Huge props on the graphics and art direction. They really made each mob and wall texture count. Lighting, wall textures, mob design and animations were all eye candy. A lot of modern 3d games have too much going on, which is straining to me in long play sessions. This is one of the very few 3d games that i found relaxing to play, like minecraft for example =P.

Puzzles were fun. Little clues on notes made it more immersive as well.

There were only a few of things I thought could be better:

Character stats. A few things here.. it was hard to determine the precise influence of each attribute. Such as, how vitality increases max health, how do equipment and perk vit bonuses work. Also dexterity seems less useful than other stats even for a rogue. traits seem a little imbalanced, "skilled" +3 skill points doesnt seem as useful as 2 str or resists bonus for example.

Equipment variety. Seems like just enough, but a tad more variety would have been great, especially if a player misses a key weapon. Though.. this may have been intentional for difficulty.

The final floor and end I felt didnt conclude things in detail enough for me. Also I thought the last "boss" didn't seem world threatening enough warrant such an imprisonment. Perhaps i missed some of the lore..

But overall, I loved the game especially since its a rare breed these days. Congrats to the developers and thanks for a great game =)
Look forward to expansions! :D
