Is it just me, or do the dungeon walls seem to be the wrong way around, as far as levels are concerned? Upper levels should be the clean cut stone and the lower levels have that dark damp mossy look.

Hahaha, isn't that so true? And yet it's the most common of tropes for this genre that the first several areas are usually bland rock, while the deeper you go the crazier the surroundings become.

Really though, I'd rather start off with plain looking dungeons and progress into cooler looking ones as time goes on. Logic be damned.

It depends on how you look at it. The top of the dungeon might be prone to more moisture than the lower portions with that exposed hole and whatnot.

There is also the possibility they were built at different times.

Maybe the bottom was first since that was sort of the reason for it to be there. Then later the mid floors when the Groms had their hay days of power. Then finely the upper levels built during the collapse of the Groms kingdoms or some such.

Hehe, all of your explanations are quite plausible. But when playing the game, I cannot shake the feeling that I am heading towards the surface and not getting deeper into the dungeon. It must have something to do with my upbringing.

I thought there was definitely a really good progression between the three. The first switch brings you into the dungeon proper and tells you the game means business, the second comes perfectly timed when you're getting tired of the previous set.

I would think the upper levels would have more exposure to light and moisture. It makes sense to me.
