Don't use potions unless you're in combat. I had more than 10 of each ingredient upon reaching the last dungeon level of the game. The whole idea of this particular dungeon is that you're sent in there butt naked and supplies are scarce. Hunger and limited resources are there probably for several reasons; 1. Limit the grinding on re-spawning legionnaires in a certain area 2. Give the sense of urgency. 3. and I could go on.
I personally think the idea of unlimited healing spoils any game, but I respect other opinions. A big hint for you is that the game is really easy to hack with CheatEngine... use with care, or you'll destroy the fun completely.
my beefs with LoG
Re: my beefs with LoG
I feel the complete opposite here. I hated my mage early on and rerolled two fighters two rogues and had a blast. You can land backstabs easy if you circle fast enough trust me on this one. And unlike mages that run out of power in long fights with rouges you always have four melee attacks all the time daggers can't run out of ammo or power. Also Mages being versatile is sort of meh to get the most bang out of your buck you really need to focus on one element. And there are few enemies were having 2 semi skilled up elements is better then having 1 higher skilled element. Spears also suck there is no skill that makes them better and there is only 1 version you will ever find so they become almost useless deeper down.schallmau3r wrote:There are many Threads praising LoG and i agree, its a gem. I found a few flaws tho:
1. Rogues are somewhat useless. They can attack from the second line but so can mages and they are by far more versatile. Also the backstabbing doesn't work well for me, maybe it's just me beeing to old to fuddle around with the movement. Without an enemy beeing frozen i couldn't land a backstab yet. The Missile/Throwing adds some nice variety but mages can throw as well and use Spears to attack. I haven't tried using rogues in the front line since tanks are more reliable and have a ton more health. I hope Almost Human changes either the Rogues abilities or work on the backstabbing to bring Rogues to their deserved Glory =)
That would be nice I would have liked the DM spell system over the level locked system they have here.schallmau3r wrote: 2. I really miss the learning by doing from DM. The fixed skill system doesn't work as well for me, i can't really say why maybe because of the thrill in gaining an unexpected skill.
Apples to oranges really. While if this was true I would have kept my mage I think the brewing system worked fine as it is in the game.schallmau3r wrote: 3. Potion brewing with ingredients limits its use by a lot. The System from DM were you could literally cast a spell into a flask was superior to the brewing in LoG. I understand that LoG does not pretend to be an exact remake and the DM brewing could disturb the gamebalance in ways i haven't thought of.
Yes one of my reason Rogues > Mages in my book.schallmau3r wrote: 4. The Spells seem somewhat limited, i wish there were more Spells.
Shrug. No exp if you do that. But you can lure them to a door kill them shut the door and rest.schallmau3r wrote: 5. Luring Enemies under doors. Yes, i used the doors in DM a LOT. Too bad it doesn't work in LoG but thats just a minor
Agreed I loved the game over all. I look forward to a map editor so I can hammer some of my own stuff out. I would KILL for a "End less dungeon" sort of random map maker just for kicks.schallmau3r wrote: All in all LoG is, as i said, a precious gem between all the casual easy mode games that flood the market. I will play it over and over and im exited about upcomming DLCs which i will buy the moment they are available.

Re: my beefs with LoG
One post mentioned that the idea behind scarce resources is to enhance a sense of urgency. This may be true, but it also constitutes one of the main complaints that I could have about this game.
The thing that I would like to be completely free to do in a game designed with many secrets and optional sections, is have time to carefully explore every area and solve optional puzzles. If there are no replenishing resources, then the degree to which I might be able to spend as much time as I wish to for exploration and experimentation becomes limited by available food. Some amount of food creating creature respawn would probably be necessary to make this possible.
One sequel/expansion idea could be to have a setting to allow the choice of whether resources/creatures might respawn. It could be interesting for fungi or potion ingredients to respawn (grow back) periodically, if one found it necessary to backtrack for the purpose of exploration or even out of necessity when resources were depleted.
For the most part, I just want to be able to spend as much time as possible in Grimrock, and don't want to have to watch the time because the party is getting hungry.
Cheers

Re: my beefs with LoG
There are places with unlimited access to food (via respawning mobs). So you don't have to worry about taking time to explore once you find one of them. By end game I had sacks of food and torches.Crash wrote: If there are no replenishing resources
Torches are the limited but you can see well in the dark so you don't have to use them all the time. That and theres always the light spell.
Also starving only stops energy regen from what I noticed and does not kill you.
