Probably licensed out the name I'd imagine. I can't remember if TSR was around back then, or if WotC had bought them up already by then...

I mean the modern King's Bounty's, they are only a couple of years old. If you haven't tried them and like strategy games give them a try. I paid £5 for the first (King's Bounty the Legend) and spent over 200 hours on it! :P

Ahh. Well, I'd still imagine that they licensed it out. It could be possible that by acquiring the rights to King's Bounty, they also acquired the rights to use the Beholder. The original agreement between TSR/WotC and the owners of King's Bounty could have been some timed licensing agreement that let them use the character for X years. *shrug*
