Hello Thom,
I've done about 8 hours of this and have completed the mine, dealt with the nightmares, the cemetery and the catacombs. I can't go anywhere from the Bog, or from the area you teleport to after the abandoned mine/ There is a puzzle of tiles that light up as you stand on them, but no clue. I have no other areas open to me and can't see a way forward. I don't know what to do with the patterned tile in the mages hall if that is a key to the twisted forest.
Can you set me on my way into a new area?

This sounds like the top floor of the Ascension room.
In case it is recall "Four is good, Five is better".

Talk to the blacksmith. You should have enough pieces of meteor by now to continue ..

It has no function. It's just decoration.

I'm so excited about this, cause I thought it was dead project!

Well, i've proceeded into the twisted forest and down to the crystal cavern below and am stumped by the puzzle that asks for buttons to be pressed to produce numbers in base 2 (got that, and a spear gate opened) then base 3. I have pressed the buttons to produce solutions that agree with the answer on the wall a number of times, but none of the gates remaining have opened, nor have any bridges appeared. Do I have to do something else after entering the solution, or am I missing something completely?

Only two of the gates are opened by this puzzle. The other gate near this puzzle is opened by pulling a lever behind it, and the other gates elsewhere in the room are opened by various other things.
Each version of the puzzle only needs to be solved once. Two of them open the aforementioned two gates, and the last version disables a force field.

So this means that having solved base 2 nd base 3 I have no more to do with this puzzle. Is that correct?

Well, I'm down in the underground section beneath the bog. I've immobilized the ice and fire monsters and am looking at the purple sphere. If there was a clue for the five buttons in the pit with the monsters I've missed it. I'm guessing that those buttons let me get the sphere, but I don't know what I should be doing with them.

You have found (at the beginning of the underground part of that room) several scrolls with eulogies...
