I pretty much always play on Hard no matter what even in every single Mod. the main campaign has become so easy on Hard now...
Something that may or may not have been mentioned is Barbarian as a Rogue is pretty much insane dps. Yah not every thing can be backstabbed but with full critical and full light weapon and the barbarian rage and the str buff every level your looking at backstabs in some very high numbers.
I have tested out duel wield dex and it simply does not compare. However I usually end up cycling through a dex Rogue just for rp reasons.

If I was min maxxing my front line is 2 barbarians 1 rat 1 mino both full critical and with armor and light weapons.
Alchemist is a Mino or Lizard depending on whether you want missile or throwing. Mage is a human or insectoid.
And although I see a post saying accuracy is useless I disagree because I put that martial on my mino so he can do damage consistently right away. Rat trait is mutation and muscular. Mino is head hunter and martial. I will pump vit and str for my front liners. HP is pretty much king when it comes to front line. By end game both can wear heavy armor too and are both able to backstab with ferocity. I find crits way more important then direct weapon proficiency too as square kiting can be slow and higher crits means enemy dies faster. I played a Mod that had 4 of those fire golems in a very tight area... sliding behind them and backstabbing was the only way I could have done that fight fast enough on Hard.
Basically for me my main focus is always crit and armors and HP. I am honestly disappointing in dex builds when I go fro max performance. However I often rp it up and put a dex build in there. They are useful on speed behind a frozen enemy backstabbing nonstop. But it is rare. In a basic game my Rogue with assassin blade and my mino barb with a simple cutlass both with light weapon and crit maxxed ... the mino barb is about dbl the dps output and with square kiting even if you are super agile positioning and eventually playing a lot it is easy to slide behind anything the cds of weapons are still popping fast enough to get a backstab rotation in consistently on either rogue or barb.

Due to food specials and other considerations I usually always have a Mino Rat Lizard and Insectoid. Insect gets swapped for human only as a mage for skilled and fast learner to get early magic faster.

If you have been playing a lot you could play a bunch of naked people and still do the main campaign...
I feel like after playing so many Mods I can sleepwalk the main campaign.
Had another Mod that had 7 freaking ice elementals in an open field and another with 2 golems in like a 3 x 15 room... madness

Over time I have come to rely on crit armors for when I have to face tank a bit and both light weapons. I do not see the validity in heavy weapons at all since light weapons get backstab with crit and are faster. My front line is always high str high vit. Unless I swap in a dex build then the dex build is maybe high dex high vit or high str and high dex. I mean on Hard we rarely are face tanking anything. That being said I do fine with a Lizard Rogue front line all dex and vit on Hard. Maybe I load more often though.

Of course whatever you feel like playing is great too. I myself usually always end up with high crits and backstab. Ogres Golems Elementals even Crabs if your fast enough go down fast with backstab. Normal sidestepping no crits or backstab... takes a long time but that can be fun because it is a challenge of stamina.

Heh - I am very different. I usually play on normal, mostly because I want to find out the story without the frustration of painfully long boss battles that my party may not be ready for. Usually when I beat RPG games, I do go back on hard, because now I know what to expect.
Define ... 'Lost.' Neverending Nights - The Neverwinter Machinima that WILL make you laugh!
