I made the steam group to help the community grow and communicate. When is that ever bad? There are always people, for whatever reason, only use one service. They may not know about the nexus. Or they might just not like using forums. I am also pointing people in the direction of the IRC channel, Dungeon Drop, this forum, and the nexus when it comes out. Personally, I love the nexus site. I found it back when Morrowind came out!
Lots of people use steam. It makes sense to make a group on steam dedicated to the dungeon editor to raise awareness. If I can get some of those people to hop on IRC, the forums, etc, we have a larger, more diverse community. Making a mod community succeed rests on its (hopefully non hostile) community base, the new content they make , and exposure to the player base. A great example of a mod community is Half-Life 1. With all the mods, maps , and total conversions, everyone found something and had fun.
I personally plan on posting my work everywhere I can.
