achievements are steam only?

Post by derailer » Tue Mar 27, 2012 1:45 pm

see subject line for question. and here's a follow-up question, why? I don't understand the reason for making differences between versions like this. if you're going to include an achievement system why not handle it in game and tie it to steam from there. why create additional features for a drm shithole like steam and treat people who get the game from gog like second rate buyers?

Well you have a choice if you like Achievements you can get the Steam version, if you don't then the GOG version may be a better option for you?

The achievements are Steam only as it runs in the background, Almost Human would have had to design a new system for this otherwise, this would have delayed the game which isn't something most fans would want.

I don't think they'll make much difference to the gameplay to be honest. :)

Hello,

Making your own system for achievements is not a simple feat and since we have only one programmer on our team, we have to be very mindful on where we pour our resources into. Saving time from implementing a feature like this ensures that the time can be used on improving rest of the game - something which certainly applies to all customers, no matter where they buy the game from. We know this is not the perfect solution for all and we apologize for that but unfortunately game development is full of difficult choices like these. I hope this answers your question.

Its perfectly fine. Steam achievements are de facto standard nowadays for PC gaming. If you dont use them - you may as well just foget about them and polish the game more/issue patches/etc :)

Achievements have always seemed silly and tacked on to me anyway. They always either encourage you to try to do dumb stuff you otherwise never would have bothered with or they are just "rewards" for doing what you would have done anyway. The only achievements that are worth it as such are the hidden ones, they at least feel neat when you "unlock" one.

Good for the team for choosing to focus on the game. Those who have to have em will be fine with their steam version.

I'm not saying I like achievement, but it is something they sounded like they were excited about, and if it's something they have put some thought into I don't see how they can just cut off one version from the other on this.

yes, the stat page and the tracker runs in the background from steam and gathers those, but the hooks for the achievements still have to be a part of the game all along the way. when they've already done the work planning out the achievements I don't see how putting together a in-game system for pulling that together isn't worth it.

yet you've put resources into actually planning out and making the achievements in the first place for the steam version? I'm calling shenanigans on this.

Achievements are Steam only because GOG does not have support for them and we don't have the man power to create a distributed achievement system. The reason is the same why the standalone version does not support friend list, in game chat, etc. These things are non-trivial to implement and there's no point in every game developer to reinvent the wheel.

I think you might be overthinking this a little bit. An achievment system doesn't have to be distributed. Lets say some gets the "Found 50 Hidden Buttons" achievment, thier reward is some extra experience points or skill points or some other in game goodie. If they happen to be using Steam then it also gives them a Steam Achievement to show thier friends. This makes those achivments you devised a part of the actual game and not part of the purchasing decision.

Achievements are meaningless if everyone gets them, which is really what they've devolved into these days. Then again, I come from a time when gamers made their own achievements, and not the other way around (e.g., I believe achievements do not make the gamer). ;)

Personally, I can't wait to play an achievement-free game. Grimrock is a prison, after all. Who's watching us in there distributing these achievements? :)
