Depends on inspiration, available spare time, etc... let's say from 2 evenings to infinity!!!

Out of curiosity, what exactly is involved in "photoshopping" a photograph into an avatar.

For the couple I've done so far, cropping, resizing, background replace, color toning, for my avatar I shopped a chainmail in, for nianu's, turned her shirt purple (figured it'd be a bit more mageish that way =)

I don't claim to be a graphics artist by any means, but since I have the tools and some knowhow, figured some folk might like it.
