Each torch seems to have it's own fuel level. That level only burns down while you are holding it. Anywhere else (including a wall sconce), it remains at its current level.

I am only on level 1 so far. Originally I started on the bottom of the grid, but the map ventured farther "south" than the gride, so I had to start over.

I think starting in the middle is your best bet if you are starting from scratch. Just my $0.02
