Recap 2012, Hello 2013!

Ok, we know we’ve been awfully quiet with our blog lately, but that’s only because we’ve been working very hard. Working hard on what, you say? More about that a bit later. Let’s first look back all the way to year 2012.

Last year was an incredible success for Almost Human. We released our first game, Legend of Grimrock, which was the best seller for two weeks in Steam and has continued to surpass our expectations. LoG reached 82 points in Metascore declaring it officially to be a great game (but we already knew that, right). We also released the Dungeon Editor that has spawned lots of brilliant mods and Steam’s Legend of Grimrock Workshop has over 450 entries already! Our great community is always surprising us with their skills, creativity and activity in the forums with 50.000 posts and counting. And those post are really high quality stuff too, unlike most forums dedicated to games ;). That means you don’t run out of dungeons to explore in the future. Towards the end of the year we also released the highly anticipated Mac and Linux versions of LoG with great new features and optimizations. And to sum up the year, we’re now proud to announce that Legend of Grimrock has sold over 600.000 copies! We would’ve been happy with just one tenth of the sales numbers, so needless to say we’re very happy and the future of our company is secured for a long time.

But great success doesn’t mean we haven’t lost our passion for making great games. So, what’s next, you might ask. We thought we could share with you a glimpse of some new exiting things we’ve been working on. But beware, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Enjoy!

    Awesome stuff! I just uninstalled the game yesterday but it looks like I’m going to have to reinstall soon-ish. Just don’t price the DLC too ridiculously, eh, AHuman? πŸ˜‰

    I remember first hearing about LoG and being really excited. This and Baldurs gate were 2 of my most anticipated games for 2012. In fact, I went out and got myself a shiny new ipad especially. Unfortunately I’m still waiting for the promised iOS version of LoG. Please put me out of my misery and tell me you’re still working on it and it will be out soon!

    Congrats on a successful 2012! I was able to buy 3 copies (2 as gifts) as I so thoroughly enjoyed the game. Looking forward to your new visions (screenshots look great!).

    I’m very glad for your success. Legend of Grimrock was my pick for game of the year until I played Dark Souls and it still holds a very comfortable second place in my personal chart.

    That said, I’m genuinely curious to know what you guys are working to.
    More Grimrock is appreciated, but just to give you a suggestion, after “reinventing” Eye of the Beholder-like grid based RPGs I would love to see you doing something inspired by Ultima Underworld.

    P.S. Was that rumor about EA contacting you for a new Underworld even remotely true?

    A million times over…please please please, include all of the features of Dungeon Master 2 in the next revision of your engine.

    Making it even possible to implement the following would be awesome:

    – Outdoor environments with dynamic weather (day/night, rain, lightning)
    – Shops and money
    – NPC’s
    – Movable boulders
    – Seamless map transitions (allowing larger maps)
    – All the little details (fireplaces, movable furniture, windows with curtains, etc)

    Features which I’ve not seen before to push LoG past all ultimate dungeon crawler expectations:

    – Water and floodgates
    – Multiple levels in the 2D grid (basically a 3D grid…so you can have ledges or walk under and over the same bridge and such)

    I’m glad to see Legend of Grimrock be a success. I’ve had a lot of fun playing it and it was one of my top games for 2012.

    Whenever you release an expansion/sequel/whatever I hope you will do so DRM free and on GOG at the same time with the same features. I bought on GOG and again in the Humble Bundle, and want to be able to stick to DRM free with the game instead of having to move it over to Steam.

    Congratulations, Almost Human! Here’s hoping you hit the 1 million milestone in the forseeable future, Legend of Grimrock was, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best games I’ve played in years and my personal game of the year 2012.

    The screenshots look AMAZING. A desert dungeon, woohoo – is it a *wink wink nudge nudge* to Ravenloft: Stone Prophet fans? πŸ˜‰
    I honestly hope it’s a sequel, though an expansion would be enough to satiate my hunger for more Grimrock adventures… until the proper sequel, of course. πŸ˜›
