It’s been another busy week at the AH office. Last week’s compatibility test kept us occupied couple of days, but we managed to squash some nice juicy bugs. The game now works better with older graphics cards like NVIDIA 6000 and 7000 series. Overall the test went really fine and we’re happy with the results. Thanks again to everybody who participated.

As the post’s title says, this week has mostly been about tweaking stuff. As we’re getting every day closer to finishing the game, major feature implementations get scarcer. We are focusing on testing, tweaking and fine tuning things here and there. Creatures have learned some nasty new moves to make the escape from the dungeons yet a bit harder. We also now have a big TO DO list on our whiteboard that we need to clear before the launch. Luckily the list gets shorter as the days pass. GUI got some tender loving as we merged the attack buttons and character portraits to the bottom right side of the screen. Now the marching order is much clearer and it is also easier to change the order by dragging the panels and everything looks a lot better and cleaner this way. The tutorial has been cleaned up and it is now easier to digest. On the business side, things nudged a bit forward, which is nice, but we can’t say anything more about that in here this time. Sorry ;)

And hey, remember to subscribe to the newsletter. Do it. Do it now. :)

If you haven’t checked out what our dear friends at Theory Interactive, who have their office in the neighborhood, have been doing check this out.

  1. Sounds great, keep working on the best Dungeon Crawler in the past 20+ years. We can wait

  2. Good to know. Slowly but surely, this game’s nearing release.

    I can’t wait to see that key-art.

    • Why can’t you give details about the release/preorder, though? Some kind of disclosed Steam details or something like that?

      • Our goals haven’t changed, we’re still working on locking down the release date and preorders. It’s just that discussions on multiple fronts while simultaneously working on the game takes time. There isn’t much to tell before the dates and details are locked down…

  3. Can’t wait for the release!

  4. Oooh oooh! I get the feeling the release announcement may be this week! :-D

    • Don’t set yourself up for disappointment, they’ve made leaps and bounds of progress very quickly but it’s never good to speculate too strongly.

  5. And you still find the time to send us updates. Amazing!!!

Keep up the good work! I’ll be waiting right here when it’s done.

    • I’m as psyched about this release as the next soul, but this is a very kind comment…

Personally I don’t see much “update” news here, just more carrot and stick.

      • Yeah, sorry about that. We were so busy working on the new gui that we almost forgot to give you a weekly update. We’ll try to make sure it doesn’t happen again :)

      • Still, it’s more than what you’ll get from most developers, in my opinion.

  6. Looking forward to the finished game, you guys are doing a fantastic job. I keep pointing all my friends (and my Dad) who’ve played Dungeon Master to Legend of Grimrock so they don’t miss out on what you guys have done.

  7. Heh, every time I see there is a new post in here, a smile creeps up and plants itself smack in the middle my face :D . Looking forward to getting my hands on this.

  8. Just suscribed (how the Hell did I miss the link ?!) anyway, now it’s done !

Tremendous site, and really enjoying music too.

  9. Cool guys, cant wait for launching his game… hopefully not too expensive :) ) btw, theory has very little to show from their game… I will check them once a month :/

  10. Any chance of a screen shot of the new GUI ?
    thx

  11. Please give it now ! Can’t longer wait for this awesome game !

  12. can’t wait for the game, I hope its out soon, really looking forward to it, keep up the good work you are doing, and here’s to the release of the game

  13. team log ty again for your time spend on this game we wish you the best. keep up the good work!!!

  14. Wait, you’re friends with the people creating Reset? That’s awesome!
Being a huge fan of puzzle and adventure games, it’s definitely on my radar.

  15. Was there a final word on if you will be using “Steam” as a distribution platform?……Please?!

    • Still working on it…

      • Have a good week-end you too! And thanks you to find time to answering of many questions ! It is not very easy where we are busy, and not very interesting to repeat always the same things.

And no, i dont ask you when the game was finished :)

  16. When you intend to put the game in steam? so we can make a pre-order it already? :)

    • Stop asking the same things over and over you dumb motherfuckers.

      • Please watch your tongue!

Before your reply I thought that this forum is free of CS-Kiddies

        You proved me wrong….

        • I usually comment with a different name, but I’m not the only one sick of reading the same crap over and over. I’m sure the developers are getting tired of reading the same questions asking when it’ll be released or having twenty people asking about it going on Steam in a single day, they’re just too nice to say anything. I’m not, so fuck you.

      • Ok – asking the same is prolly boring to read, but are you sure with your reaction????

  17. If you’re looking for an experienced top notch community manager, drop me a line :)

  18. So, how is the interface nowadays? I remember the early trailer showing a tiny window in the lower right corner which the player had to focus most of his attention on. To play devil’s advocate: Are the mechanics still limited to a 200×100 pixel window in a corner?

  19. Reset does look/sound very interesting

  20. I think a customizable UI would have been nice. Like in modern MMORPGs where you can drag and drop the icons around the screen. So everybody could change the UI to look like the one of his/her favourite classic dungeon crawler.

  21. Good to know things are getting in the order you guys want. It’s worth waiting for it.

  22. Amazing, I love the new, tidy interface. Can’t wait. :)

  23. In which language will you release the game and which will you patch after release?

  24. Hi Almost People :) just an idea.. a few days after release someone will make some kind of grimrockwiki or some other kind of walkthrough with spells, skills, weapons, maps, solutions… we all know it’s gonna happen. Do you plan to make something like that yourself? I mean.. all the secrets will eventually find its way out through the internet, woludn’t it be better if those information come directly from your team? Of course no secret walls, no riddles.

    • That’s a good point. Unfortunately we probably do not have much time to work on something like this before the launch and we can’t stop somebody else setting up the wiki… So I think it would work best if somebody else would create and maintain such a wiki with proper spoiler tags and maybe even progressive hint system for the puzzles. What do you think?

  25. Will there be any “easter eggs” or similar things? I remember Wizardry had the evil “WERDNA” which was one of the author’s names (Andrew) spelled backwards.

Oh, wait a minute, they wouldn’t be easter eggs if you told us about them, would they! :)

  26. Time for a random question from a longtime lurker/fan:

My fav dungeon crawler is EOB2, by far. My favourite features from EOB2 are the occasional full-screen “hand-painted” screens with description and special music; examples include first entering Temple Darkmoon (meeting the two fantastically new-age-fanatic clerics), meeting the immortal-dying elf held forever in a life-draining throne, the intermittent contacts with Khelben, the reveal of Khelben being Dran, etc.

Will you have something like this in Grimrock? :) I.e. scenes that pull you out of the standard engine a bit to focus fully on the story?

  27. Accidentally stumbled on this page from a game magazine. Wow, this looks really cool and remembers me of the good old times! Great interface and artwork! Will the game only play in underground dungeons, or will there also be “wood”-dungeons like in Lands of Lore I ?

  28. Have there been any newsletters so far? I’ve subscribed for them, but haven’t received any. I think I subscribed last year, but I’m not sure. My email address gives a “Warning: this email address has already been subscribed.” message if I try using it again. Just wondering if I’m missing something…

    • We haven’t sent any newsletters so far. We reserve the use of the newsletter only for major events like the release of the game and such.

If you want to be notified when the blog updates, you can use the RSS feed of this blog for it (most mail clients support RSS feeds and I think there are plugins for browsers too)

  29. Dear Petri:

If the game does well, is there a possibility in the near future to implement Dx11 features into LoG. Just imagine the already lovely looking dungeons with numerous improvements such as tessellation !!

Best wishes for all of you and LoG.

    • i completely agree with this improvement !
it will be ultimate stunning & captivating dungeon for a sequel..

    • It’s unlikely that it will happen anytime soon. There’s more efficient ways to improve the graphics than rewrite the renderer for DX11. What I mean is that DX9 (almost) has all the features we need and has a large install base, tessellation alone is not good enough feature to justify the cost of writing and maintaining one more rendering path, at least not yet.

      • you are right petri, dx9 has all the features to create miraculous dungeons..and you did it very well ! however, how can i say , the close shot stones’ edges which are raised both on the left and right sides of the wall in the hardware test looks very jagged and sharp on end..if they looked bumpier then they would not catch a glimpse every time i open the game..sorry but that’s what i see on the raised wall bricks..can you overhaul them at least ?

  30. question:
Did you find a solution to the ogre pass under doors without touching the upper wall and when he attacks as were seen in the video of the beta

  31. If LoG turns very successful, do you think you could do as epic, lengthy and complex sequel/new game as Wizardry 7 for example? With open landscape, numerous cities/dungeons/special places, hard riddles, world changing quests, traveling NPCs, great storyline and mostly – hellishly difficult to finish?

  32. ok i got it it’s a dungeon crawler but we are in search of something ?

it’s a random dungeon every new game or character I create ??

omg i can’t wait for it

    • Your mission is to find a way out of Mount Grimrock. The dungeons are not random and you can customize your own characters.

  33. Can you imagine LoG as a MMORPG? Without open field, but just with “neverending” areas deep inside. I know this is your plan for 2013, so sorry for revealing it! ;)

BTW have Juho already found all the secrets or his score is still 50/50??? :D

    X fingers!

  34. Any chance of you implementing a borderless windowed mode like I suggested before? It may seem like a small detail but it adds a lot of usability. =)

    • I’ll keep that in mind but no promises yet.

      • i run it in a borderless windowed mode. all you need to buy windowblinds and install..

        • @myriac: Buying a third party product? For a feature that is already present in most modern games? Sorry, but uh.. what?

@petri: Okay! I really hope you can implement it. Is it a hard thing to implement? I may be the only person to bring it up here so far, but if it’s not there at launch I bet you’ll get other requests for it. :)

  35. Why so much hate about MMORPG???? :D I still play Vanguard and newly SWTOR and both are pretty good games imho.
And I faked it is plan for 2013 ;) So no worries yet :)
For sure I do respect that dungeon is a “solo pain” as it alwys was ;)

    • Neither of those are good games. The last good MMO I’ve seen was Ultima Online, the rest are just boring old WoW rehashes, and that game is trash.

  36. I get more and more frustrated returning here… I know you do hard work and doing everything to publish Legend of Grimrock asap. Any release plans yet? And don’t tell me “Yes, last year!” ;)

  37. hey, when are you planning to show us the new GUI screens that you promised? ;)

  38. hello team I have a question:
Is there possible to create a team with only 4 characters human, with the mage and warrior team pitcher object and there are there several choices for character portrait image of the human class ???

  39. im waiting for your games like a little child waiting for candy. I played EOB I II III , ISHAR and other titles when i were young… i would like to play this type o games ONCE MORE. PLS RELEASE IT QUICKLY :> regards from POLAND

  40. and pleasee… can you make the game a lot better than Dungeon Master 2? :D DDD

I’m waiting also for final release!

  41. very well but it would not be better to put more than four portraits image picture people per class,
portraits images picture of ninja warrior or mage would be better

    • How about a supported import option for BMPs or TGAs?
(Or a ReadMe.txt that lists the image dimensions, format, and necessary location.)

  42. Anything new for us today in your LoG blog? As you know, we look forward to these updates

  43. Heads Up We adores your striking website cheers and pls keep the ball moving
