If you’re just dying to know who are the geniuses behind a masterpiece of such grandeur as Legend of Grimrock, this post is for you! Almost Human Ltd. is a Finnish indie game studio founded in the beginning of the year 2011 by four foolhardy game developers with loads of games industry experience but close to zero knowledge of entrepreneurship. Our office is in Matinkylä, Espoo, in the bottom floor of an apartment building. It’s a nice and quiet (and super cheap!) location and the previous tenant of this office apparently was involved in some sort of indoor agricultural project and if you want to commute to work via horseback it can be arranged since we are situated right next to a horse stable.
In the beginning, we kicked things off by doing work-for-hire style jobs for other Finnish game companies but now we think we are ready to tread the waters by ourselves. Or actually that’s been going on for the last few weeks already and, despite getting our feet seriously wet, the deeper waters seem mighty inviting still! That is not to say that we won’t do some odd jobs on the side occasionally but our primary focus is definitely on our own games from now on. But we’ll have to wait and see if this thing takes off. If you want to help us out on our quest, just tell your friends of the game or post on a forum that you go to or bake a cake with the name of the game on the frosting or something. Anyways, now we need to venture onwards to discover the secrets of the individual developers behind Legend of Grimrock!
Petri is the programmer of the team and the helmsman of this project. He is responsible for the tech and all other things of a coderly nature and, despite him being a programmer, he has a keen eye for visuals too. Before Almost Human he worked at Remedy Entertainment on Max Payne 2 and Alan Wake as a graphics programmer. Way back in his youth, he used to work on small games and demoscene products on the venerable Amiga platform and he also has an Assembly demo competition victory under his belt with Maturefurk’s Lapsuus.
Olli, as the animator and character rigger of the team, has the reverend position of having the most expensive individual piece of software in the company (Autodesk Softimage aka XSI, if anyone’s curious). If you see something slithering in the darkness in our game, the odds are that it is of Olli’s making. Back in the old days, he worked with Petri on the Amiga hobby projects but more recently he has worked at Futuremark on the cutting edge graphics of 3DMark benchmark programs and he was also involved in the animations of a Futuremark Games Studio’s Shattered Horizon. His frequent consumption of the substance known as “broccoli” causes deep grief and worry in the rest of the team.
Juho, after working a brief stint in the world of non-realtime graphics, joined Futuremark to work on the visuals of Shattered Horizon and other projects. In Legend of Grimrock he is responsible for a myriad of things of graphical nature. Creature modeling, characters and environment graphics are his domain among many a smaller thing. He also suffers from a terrible curse that forces him to ride a bicycle for hundreds of kilometers each week. We are working on a cure but we are still a few ingredients short.
Antti used to work on 3D games on mobile platforms that no longer exist (like the notorious Gizmondo) in a kick-ass company that sadly no longer exists (Fathammer). After that, he joined Remedy Entertainment to work on Alan Wake as an environment artist. In Legend of Grimrock, his duties are pretty much all over the place: graphics, audio and pretty soon he will also start doing level design and scripting too. He also has his own, rather sporadically updated blog that covers music, art, photography and even the occasional programming thingamajig he creates. His latest grand achievements are writing this post and feeling silly about writing of himself in the third person.
